Some times in life we have big defining moments, where, in an instant, our life changes. And some times, those moments are subtle and unremarkable.
Today, I want to share with you a moment just like that. A moment where an idea literally altered the course of my life, although I didn’t know it a the time.
It was 2015, and after reading Getting Real About Having It All, I decided to attend a one-day ‘possibility workshop’ with its author, Megan Dalla-Camina.
I’d just started a new role and was excited to jump in and prove myself. But I knew I needed to find a better way of balancing my career, life and family.
See, in the previous 4 years I’d had a couple of major burnouts. I’d pushed myself to a horrible, dark place and I knew how I’d been working (and living) wasn’t sustainable.
So, I wanted to use the opportunity of a fresh start to set myself up for a new way of being. One that involved boundaries and self-care (not that I’d have ever used those terms at the time), all whilst wowing the socks off my new boss.
The idea that changed my life
On that day, almost 4 years ago, Megan introduced me to this mantra that literally changed my life:
‘I am exactly where I need to be and everything will happen in the fullness of time’.
This idea struck to my core.
It literally shifted my perspective and life trajectory, because in that moment, I was opened to the possibility that I was on track in my life.
I was suddenly released from feeling that I had to strive for everything, which, for a ‘Type A’ like me, was profound.
What happened next
Now at the time, I didn’t use mantras. In fact, if I’m honest, I considered them to be something for hippies. (And I didn’t think I liked hippies. Boy, how I changed!).
But this day sparked the start of a new wave of personal development and growth for me.
Suddenly free of the burden to be more, I subconsciously gave myself permission to just be.
To enjoy myself.
To find joy in the now rather than always looking for what was next.
This opened up new, unexpected opportunities to me.
Gradually I began to do things just out of interest with no predetermined outcome. And through that, I’ve been able to look at my life with fresh eyes.
I began to recreate my life vision and started to define myself and my own self-worth, through my own eyes, without reference to titles or being defined just by what I do.
Consequently, this changed my life.
It allowed me to find and connect with my purpose, which has led to a shift in my career. It has given me the courage to shift away from my established property career and train and become a coach.
It has also seen me explore my own spirituality, something which I’d never have imagined, let alone considered, 5 years ago.
As a result, all of this has given me clarity, made me more confident and most importantly, has made me happier.
In conclusion
So, as the new year and the new decade approach, I want to leave you with these final thoughts:
You are enough, exactly as you are.
Your value is not defined by your achievements. It is innately in you and you do not need to prove anything to anyone, including yourself.
You can change your life whenever you choose to. It is your life and you are not defined or limited by past choices or mistakes.
Trust in yourself and the universe and know that you are exactly where you’re supposed to be and that everything will happen in the fullness of time.
Embrace this idea and let it serve you and support you to live the life you dream of.
