goal setting for 2020

A new decade is almost upon us and many of us are thinking about we want from the new year and from the 2020s . But setting goals isn’t always easy, so I thought I’d share some practical tips to guide you in your 2020 goal-setting process.

I suggest dedicating a few uninterrupted hours, getting your journal out and cozying up with a cup of tea or glass of wine!

Reflect on 2019 before setting goals for 2020

Before you get excited with planning for the new year, take some time to reflect on the year that’s been. Consider these questions?

  • What am I most proud of this year?
  • When was I happiest?
  • Who’s company did I enjoy?
  • What did I not like this year?
  • What felt hard?
  • Is there anything I regret?

Be sure to think about all areas of your life – your career, relationships (romantic and with family and friends), finances, your contribution to society, travel and recreation, and health.

Use your answers as guideposts to pursue things that brought you joy and eliminate things that didn’t.

Focus on what you really want and know why it’s important

First of all, without filtering, write down what you really want. Don’t rationalise or overthink this. Instead, allow your mind to wander and consider new possibilities.

Next, write down why this is important to you.

By adding the why, it allows you to evaluate the true meaning and intention behind your desire and understand how it fits into your life vision.

Simplify your goals for 2020 to amplify your results

Decide on your goals for 2020. It is perfectly okay to have just one goal and I recommend a maximum of three. As a result of keeping your list of goals short, you’ll be able to stay focused and achieve maximum results.

For each goal, make sure it is a SMART goal and clearly define what will success look like, and how you’ll feel once you achieve it.
