Imposter syndrome is spoken about all of the time and the term is thrown around often, especially when talking about women and their careers.
But what is imposter syndrome and how can we use it to our advantage?
In this episode, I’m exploring how women can recognise and deal with imposter syndrome to up-level and even grow their careers.
When we experience imposter syndrome, we often feel like a fake or a fraud. All of our success and achievements are seen as an illusion and we’re inwardly terrified of being discovered as incompetent and undeserving.
You’re absolutely not alone in feeling this way. It’s a very common phenomenon with up to 82% of people identifying as having imposter syndrome which leads them to avoid taking risks, hide away and play small.
It’s my aim in this conversation to normalise this feeling so it doesn’t hold you back and create a lack of confidence and low self-esteem. I’ll run you through my strategy of 6 ways you can use imposter syndrome to uplevel and grow your career because it will always be present, we just need to learn how we can utilise it for success.

[1:45]: Imposter syndrome is a self-diagnosed phenomenon where you don’t feel like you’ve earned the achievements you have.
[2:48]: Imposter syndrome ultimately creates a lack of confidence. However, you could experience low self-confidence but not be experiencing imposter syndrome.
[3:28]: A lack of self-confidence is the number one issue I see holding women back.
[4:18]: Imposter syndrome is very common with up to 82% of people identifying as having it.
[5:06]: When you’re the only woman in the room, you can start to feel like a unicorn and feel immense pressure to be perfect at all times.
[6:36]: It’s necessary to let go of the concept of perfectionism to avoid burnout and anxiety.
[6:54]: Signs of imposter syndrome: avoiding taking risks, avoiding being visible and playing small.
[8:19]: When we recognise these patterns of behaviour, we can start to challenge our thoughts and choose to act differently.
[9:10]: We need to detach our self-worth from our achievements and external validation. Working with and understanding imposter syndrome is an ongoing process that we need to consistently employ and use as fuel to uplevel.
