There is a lot of discussion currently around the topic of women in the workforce. In particular, how we as women can break through the barriers and female stereotypes that exist within the patriarchal society we all live in.
If you’re a woman in a male-dominated industry, you’ll understand the challenges of being boxed into a stereotype. You’re either the nice girl who is polite, accommodating, caring and obliging. Or you’re the bad girl – defiant, bossy and bitchy.
Yes, it’s important to be professional and polite. But you also need to assert yourself and make your voice heard. Otherwise, you’ll always be at a disadvantage in a field that is dominated by men.
As ambitious women, we cannot have the careers we want while being the nice girl. It’s time to step away from the nice girl identity and define for ourselves what it means to be a confident, successful woman. We need to make sure we are respected and valued for the amazing contributions we make to our industries.
Breaking through the barriers that exist for women in the workplace is not going to be easy. But if we all work together, we can make a difference.
